We love the Syrah fruit from grower Kirk Williams’ KW Ranch vineyard, and 2013 did not disappoint. This Syrah produces a profound nose, characterized by layers of smokehouse aromas intertwined with black currant, blackberry, and black and green olive.
All our single vineyard Syrahs use whole cluster fermentation and a similar oak regimen. This hellps highlight the individual personality of each vineyard. Deep and dark, this Syrah somehow manages to be both bold and elegant. The bouquet is a potpourri of plum, leather, blackberries, earth, rocks and forest. On the palate it is rich, persistent, mildly tannic, neatly structured and extrememly long. All in all, this is a classic example of Santa Lucia Highlands Syrah.
KW Ranch is located in the heart of the Santa Lucia Highlands, southeast of McIntyre Vineyard and just northwest of Gary’s Vineyard. Planted to both Pinot Noir and Syrah in 2000 by Kirk Williams, the site features a well-exposed, gently-rolling hillside with gravely loam soils. Wines from KW Ranch tend to be intense and highly aromatic.
