A lighter style than our other Pinot bottlings, this wine reflects its name EX which means "out of" or "" in Latin. These grapes are some of the first harvested from our estate vineyard and the wine is produced with minimal handling so that the result reflects a focus on the pure flavor of sustainably grown grapes from our estate San Saba Vineyard. Upfront cherry and spice aromas lead to flavors of red fruit, spice and a touch of earthiness all bound by clean tannins. Oak aging is kept to only 20% new so that there is some depth added from the barrels but the focus remains on the personality of our estate fruit.

Vineyard Notes
Our Estate San Saba Vineyard is sheltered in a nook just below the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA, roughly 25 miles southeast of the town of Monterey. Our climate is heavily influenced by the morning fog and afternoon winds from the nearby Pacific Ocean. This is a cool site with little rainfall and one of the longest growing seasons in the world. Our unusual climate allows us to produce ripe, concentrated wines of exceptional balance.
Production Notes
With a name meaning “out of” in Latin, EX speaks to our focus on expressing the personality and characteristics of our Certified Sustainable (SIP) estate vineyard. We harvest these pinot grapes a bit earlier than other lots to retain bright acidic energy. Berry clusters are hand sorted before crushing and fermenting. During fermentation, 20% of lots experience whole cluster fermentation to add complexity. New French oak is kept to a low percentage so that the flavor retains focus on our estate grown fruit.
